How to Decorate For the Holidays On a Budget

With the holidays just around the corner, we know that many of our friends and families in our communities all over North America have a lot on their plate (and we Wreath - How to decorate on a budgetdon’t mean only turkey!). Families have holiday parties, school recitals, family gatherings, and a million errands to run this time of year. The budget can get tight too, especially in this season of giving.

But it is still important to find ways to incorporate holiday decorating into your home. This is doable with a little planning, a little creativity, and a dash of holiday spirit.

Go overboard on the greenery

Nothing makes a house feel like the holidays more than the smell of baked goods and fir trees. Use real fir around the house in unexpected places to make your home or apartment not only smell great but look great too. And you don’t have to pay top dollar for fresh fir! Go to your local Christmas-tree lot and ask to buy the trimmings from the trees – most often, the bottom branches are trimmed as people buy their trees off the lots. You can often get great greenery for little to no cost by asking around.

Place the greenery in bunches with red ribbon and twinkle lights in vases and place around the corners of your living room and kitchen to create a timeless festive atmosphere. Carefully lay greenery along the mantles of your home and top with battery-powered flicker lights or use twine to wrap the boughs of fir around the banister of your home, both inside and out.

No such thing as too many lights

Seriously, adding twinkle lights to every nook-and-cranny of your home is a quick and cheap way to inject your life with a heavy dose of holiday spirit. Liberally use twinkle lights in glass vases on your kitchen table, intertwined with your greenery on the mantle, and framing the windows of your home. You can even create the outline of a tree on your walls as an extra dose of festivity.

Invest in your home

Now, this one may seem counter-intuitive, but this step will not only add holiday spirit, but will ultimately stretch your budget in the long run. Invest in your home by re-painting the front door or living room. These are both spaces of holiday joy and welcome – a brand-new coat of paint on your door or a fresh color in your living room will lift your holiday spirits like nothing else.

The investment pays off, too. Research shows that painting your front door and investing in your home’s walls ultimately increase the re-sale value. Take the time today to make an investment in your future, while also enjoying the cheer of a holiday wreath hanging on your brand-new front door.
