Hues for Heroes was an idea I came up with on Veterans Day in 2018. I kept the idea to himself (even from my wife, Kristin!) until Memorial Day of 2019 where, once casually mentioned during a business meeting, spread among peers and friends like wildfire! The idea, simply put, was to provide painting services to a military veteran and their family on Veterans Day. I wanted to help someone who was suffering, someone who really needed to feel the love from some folks who are truly grateful for their service to our country. I was hoping for some support, but I wasn’t expecting so many others to want to join in! Right away, we had a few terrific volunteer professionals step up to create the logo, help with marketing, photography, project materials, candidate selection and even donate their time the days leading up to and the day of the project!
As a military veteran myself, I know that more often than not, veterans are uncomfortable asking for help in any capacity, and Andrew, our 2019 Hues for Heroes recipient was no different. Andrew had been suffering with Stage 3 Esophageal cancer, he had undergone several surgeries and was in the process of having his stomach rebuilt when we met. His positive outlook, courage and sensible nature inspired us all. Andrew; husband to wife Trysha and father of 2 young children, had much to fight for and we were honored to provide a little help along his journey. We are pleased to report that as of this article, Andrew’s final surgery is scheduled (fingers crossed!) and if all goes well, he will soon be able to eat real food, which is a huge deal!!
In creating this team, volunteers from several trades worked together to provide safer vehicles, for the long rides to the Mayo Clinic during the upcoming Minnesota winter, make a few safety modifications in their home and ultimately freshen up their space with new interior paint! All of these services were provided at no cost to Andrew’s family.
The 2019 project was funded solely by 360 Painting, local Hirschfields paint stores and volunteer painters and contractors. In 2020, we plan to pursue 501c3 status and seek financial support from local Veteran agencies as well. Andrew and his father have also offered to be involved and play the role of spokespersons. We expect to have a bigger presence in the communities this year and hopefully offer a bit more to our vets as the needs arise. Be on the lookout this Memorial Day for our official launch and let the search begin! Hues for Heroes is seeking Military Veteran nominations who could really use a Fresh Look on Life.
