You're Not Chasing the Paint. You're Chasing the Feeling

Last blog, we talked about why copying a Pinterest house rarely produces the same results.

So if we shouldn't copy Pinterest...

What SHOULD we do?

Both of these homes use the same exact exterior color palette for their siding, trim, and shutters - yet they create a completely different impression.

Yes, the paint is the same, but the fixed elements:

  • Brick undertones

  • Stone accents

  • Roof color

  • Landscaping

  • Architectural details

  • Window design

All of these influence how the exterior color palette is perceived.

Before choosing a palette, it's important to evaluate the fixed elements of your home - not just the paint colors you love in someone else's photo.

What Pinterest Is Actually Good For

If this article has taught us anything, it's that Pinterest isn't a great tool for copying.

But it is an incredible tool for identifying what you're drawn to.

Instead of focusing on recreating one specific home, create a Pinterest board with 10 - 20 exterior photos you absolutely love.

Then step back and look for patterns. Ask yourself questions like:

  • Do I keep saving dark, moody homes?

  • Am I drawn to warm, earthy colors?

  • Do I prefer high contrast or low contrast?

  • Do I love black accents?

  • Am I attracted to modern designs or traditional ones?

  • Do I seem to prefer soft, cozy homes or bold, dramatic ones?

Most homeowners are surprised to discover they're drawn to a specific feeling rather than a specific paint color.

In fact, many Pinterest boards contain several completely different exterior color palettes, but they all share a similar mood, level of contrast, architectural style, or overall feeling.

Maybe every house you've saved has cedar accents.

Maybe they all feature warm whites.

Maybe they all have dramatic black windows.

The goal isn't to copy a single photo. The goal is to identify the common themes that keep appearing in the homes you love. Once you understand the feeling you're trying to create, it becomes much easier to adapt those ideas to your own home.

Don't chase the color. Chase the feeling!

Don't start with paint colors.

Start with the fixed elements - the things you can't change.
